This year our featured author/illustrator is Kylie Dunstan.
Kylie who drew on her time in Northern Australia to create the picture book Collecting
Colour was the winner of the 2009 CBCA Picture Book of the Year award.
Collecting Colour was inspired by her time spent as an Arts Officer at a community
centre in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. One of her duties was to take the local
women out on bush trips collecting pandanus and colour for weaving and dyeing the
mats and baskets sold in the Arts Centre.
The book tells the story of white Australian girl and her best friend Olive who
spend the day helping to gather the pandanus leaves and stringy bark for
making into strong bags and baskets using the bright yellows and pinks, from special
plants and berries. Kylie uses Nepalese paper collage illustrations to create the
beautiful original illustrations.
